I’m happy to introduce to you today, Kristin from Simply Klassic. I was drawn to her blog from her home projects, and fell in love with her Star Wars Boys Room. I enjoyed reading about her heart in placing her kids pictures around her home, and loved reading her sweet adoption story.
Hey Capturing Joy fans! I’m so excited that Kristen’s letting me crash at her place today! I’m Kristin and I have a little space on the web call “Simply Klassic” where I share creative DIY on a single mom’s budget. I am a single mom of two preschoolers with a passion for simplified DIY, home decor and cooking. I’m exhausted, my house is a mess, and my kids are a handful – hopefully that means I’m just like you!
I have always been passionate about including photos of my family in my home decor. My children love seeing pictures of themselves in prominent places in our home, like the mantel. My simplified Valentine’s decor this year was based off of a photo of them.
If you’re new to the Simply Klassic story, you might want to start with my adoption story. Both of my children were adopted – my son at just nine weeks, and my daughter at two and a half. While they are both aware that they were adopted, it’s not something they fully understand just yet. What they do understand, is that they are part of a family, and they are loved.
There are tons of ways to show your children that they are a part of your family, but while little ones understand the gestures of love, like hugs and kisses, they love to SEE it in a tangible way.
I don’t have a gallery wall of family photos, rather I’ve chosen to place them throughout, in each room. For example, my daughter wanted a “Princess room.” While I was on an extremely limited budget, I wanted to make sure I included photos of her in her room.
Using Photoshop, I edited a photo of my daughter in her Halloween costume, framed it and hung it on the wall above her bed.
I also included a special photo of her and I at Disneyland on Mother’s Day in a frame on her dresser.
I recently finished up a makeover in my son’s bedroom. He wanted a Star Wars room, and I had a photo of him as Darth Vader that I edited the background out of and hung on the wall.
I can’t stress enough the importance of having family photos throughout your home, it’s such a boost to your children’s self esteem. You don’t have to have a huge gallery wall, or fancy frames or even professional photos.
I use photos to help us remember the happy days we’ve spent together. When choosing photos to display I think: Does it guide a memory? Does it evoke a feeling of a time or place? Those are the kinds of photos I want to display.
