My name is Alison Bickel, and I blog over at ‘this homemade life…’. Thanks to Kristen for including me in her inspiring, ‘Decorating with Portraits,’ series, I’m excited to be a part of it.
What I love most about decorating with personal images is how much it makes a house feel like a home. There are times when I think I could literally wallpaper a room with the number of images I love, it’s so hard to choose what goes on the walls! That said, I like to keep my wall displays simple and easy to change with my ever changing favorite images.
Although I do love color most of the time, there is something to be said for a good B & W image. These three images of my boys are above the coat hooks and shelves in our entry. I believe in going big or going home where image size is concerned. The center image is a 16 x 24 standout and is flanked by two 11×14 frames. I don’t have many standouts, but this image is an all time favorite. I think when my sons are all grown up this picture will still have a place in our home. It is perfectly them.
Our kitchen photo display is probably my favorite on in the house. It is a 24 x 48 photo board that holds images from all our latest and greatest adventures….farmers’ markets, favorite food, mountain vacations and silly moments captured in our day to day. I’ll often catch one of my boys looking at the board during a meal and it isn’t long before they are saying, ‘Remember when….’. Those images have been the starter for many lively dinner conversations and walks down memory lane.
Along with the photos in our wall displays I also like to mix in my children’s artwork for a more personal touch. I love the cheerfulness it brings and there is nothing quite as fun as the look of surprise on their faces when they see their own creation hanging for all to see. In our master bedroom display I’ve got a mix of artwork from my boys, a cherished birthday card from my husband along with a few more favorite portraits. Although the frames are different I tied it together with a color theme of yellow and white.
Thank you, Alison! I love the display off of our kitchen, SO fun, especially that it evokes memories in the dinner conversation! I have a little spot in my kitchen that would be fun for that. I also found Alison via The Creative Mama blog where she contribute’s, but more regularly on her blog, This Homemade Life (where she shares her lovely pictures of ingredients and recipes) and also on facebook.
