My husband pretty much rocks. He built me a custom desk for my office exactly how I wanted it, for under $50. I’m a desktop kinda girl. I like having a place to go when I need to get things done, and it helps me set a time limit as well. I had been working out of a cave for quite some time. A black cave that was a desk armorie that could close, but who am I kidding, the doors never closed, and I had ZERO desk space, so all my papers were spread all over the floor. I wanted an “L” shaped corner type desk, but I wanted it in the middle of the room, not against the wall.  Most desks like that had an ugly backing because it was meant to be against the wall, so it just woudn’t do. I wanted to be able to just avert my eyeballs if I was on the computer when my kids walked into the room…instead of them seeing my back.  I also wanted a funky shape, I told my hubby, an “inkblot” to which he said, “o….k….” And I knew I wanted a bright YELLOW! Here is the final product, then a step by step.

We used 4 boards to start with. They measured 5ft x2ft and about 3/4 inch thick. Then we trimmed down to about the size we wanted for the surface of the desk.

He then added some creative shaping for me, a slight wavy look.My hubby then re-inforced the bottom of the desk in varying ways.We wanted to shape the legs exactly as we wanted them, but don’t have the tool to do so (lathe) and Home building stores don’t even rent them. I was happy to find these legs at Home Depot. They were $10 each, which was more than I wanted to pay. I even went to Habitat for Humanity Restore to look for banister legs, but they were too thin. I went back to HD, and was delighted upon checking out that I was about to save 50% of my purchase for opening up an account, so I did it. I then cancelled shortly thereafter. So I got each leg for $5 each. (It would make the desk just over $50 if you didn’t get that smokin’ deal that I got).Hubby even installed a drawer to put stuff in. I didn’t need much space in the desk because I have a wall of cabinets right next to me, I wanted to keep it simple. My littlest one took a few of me on my phone applying some glaze after it was painted.

The yellow in the picture looks more mustard, but it’s a bright cheery yellow. It looks fantastic in my new office–a reveal that will have to wait until I finish a few little details. I am lovin’ it though. You can see a very slight peek scanning the phone pictures above.

Do you want to see this desk in it’s new home? My colorful home office is so much cheerier with it!
