I’ve always been quite passionate about women getting out from behind the camera and getting in pictures more with their families. We are the ones who tend to take all of the pictures, and are often too critical of ourselves to want to be in them. Well I’m here to say that you will regret that someday, and am going to help you make some changes.

{Taken in California last summer by my friend Shari}

{Shoutout thanks to my friend Jamie for designing this cute camera button for me!}

Pull out your smart phone, get in  pictures with your loved ones, and hashtag #capture the joy.

I’ve come up with a list of 100 ideas to jump start your creativity.  They are prompts to get the thinking flowing.  Involve the kids, ask for their input, this can be a fun project to work on together!  To me, it’s not just about taking a picture and being done, but it also promotes having fun together, and the memories that come from that fun that the kids had with you!

{Download this 8×10 printable here.}

As you use this list, the ideas of your kids, your own ideas, and come together to share with this community, we will in turn get ideas from each other. I’m kicking it off the day after Mother’s Day, so you SHOULD have something to show for your Mother’s day!  Then we’ve got the summer ahead of us…while the kids are home…

Here is how you play along, it’s as easy as 1.2.3.

1. Get in pictures!  Self timer (lots of apps for that!) or hand the camera off to someone (even my 3 year old can do i).  You’ll have to get over feeling awkward about that.

2. Upload to instagram or twitter

3. Hashtag #capture the joy

You’ll show up on the Saturday weekly post, and I’ll select a few favorites then.

This isn’t just for mothers of young children, it can be for the singles with neices/nephews/those you babysit, your bestie, grandma’s with grandchildren, etc. This is to document YOU with those you love.

 If you’d like to help me spread the word, “pin” something from this page, post the button on your blog, or share this link on facebook. The more the merrier! Who wants to join in? If you’d like to participate weekly, but worried you might forget, leave a comment (I will see your email) and I’ll send you an email each week as a reminder.

My husband is in lots of pictures with the kids, I’m not in so many (though there are enough that should I be blessed with grandchildren some day, they’ll know that I existed and what I looked like).

    I think this is such a great idea and I’d love to play along. But I have a question. Will others who are playing along view my photos? Or will it just be you? I’m thinking about posting them to my blog.

  20. I love this. I am guilty of hiding behind the camera and I really do want more pictures with me and my kiddos. I am going to start this weekend. Thanks!

    Found your site yesterday and I am in love! I just bought a better camera and was having doubts. It is a Canon, Power Shot SX 50, so no interchangeable lenses…..doubts seep in. Log ago I had a SLR (flim days)…I love photography, it is fun, helps me see and I love capturing kids, life, art etc. I leaned toward the smaller camera for ease of use…but big DOUBT am I silly not to get the SLR? I am 65+, my kids wonder will I be a target for theft in strange Cities I plan to visit soon with a BIG camera? Then I get the ohhh,hummm too, will it be to heavy to lug around…all that stuff. I wonder if other women who love photography and learning have the same push me pull you issues and what their experiences are with the issues and solutions. I would value your advice. As you know it is is big investment and creative tools are delicious treats of life. Help I have 13 days left to decide… before I cannot take the camera back… to upgrade or whatever. I have already learned great tips from two days of reading your site and I will be a regular. Thanks for your time and insights. Jackie

    • Kristen Duke says:

      Hi Jackie! So happy you found me;) Ugh…tough questions. My take on the camera situation is I like to have both big and small (ducking for cover!). Nothing can replace the beautiful quality that comes from an slr. It’s quick and crisp, and if used correctly, amazing. However, I use my cell phone for a lot of the everyday shots because I don’t want to lug it around. I bring my slr on vacations and such. I don’t think you are any more of a target though…lots of people have nice cameras, but it is heavy, and cumbersome at times. I love how you said, “creative tools are delicious treats of life.” Hope that helps!
