The Family Proclamation is a declaration that came out in 1995.  It is a guideline for families to look to in uncertain times. It is a statement that a lot of Mormons have framed in their homes.  Traditionally it is just a black and white document. I wanted something a little more colorful, fun and jazzed up.  That is how this colorful print of The Family: A Proclamation to the World came into my life. The Family: A Proclamation to the World prints

If you’ve been around my site for a while, you probably know that I’m a big fan of memorizing things with my family. And we started to memorize the family proclamation, but it’s long.  I thought we needed to separate it out a bit.

Though most of my fellow Christian Mormon friends see this document as beloved, I can see why some people may not love it. It speaks pretty plainly about some current hot topics.  But this came out in 1995, before they were hot topics. We see this as divine revelation from God before it was necessary, so that when it was needed, we already had it. Words that came through our prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, to those of us who may be confused about some of these hot topics. We believe this to be the word of God on these topics, which is a tough pill to swallow for some people.

The family proclamation hits on tough topics such as gender identity, homosexuality, our spirits before birth, abstinence before marriage, eternal families, abuse, and the roles of mothers/fathers. I always thought of it as “normal” but as I’ve grown up and realized a lot of the world does not view this the same, I’ve come to realize this will likely be something that is hard for some to read.

Highlights from The Family Proclamation

I wanted to highlight a few of those lines, but you can read/print the official family proclamation for FREE here.

    • Marriage between a man and woman is ordained of God
    • Family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children
    • Gender is an essential characteristic of individual pre-mortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.
    • Families to be united eternally.
    • In the pre-mortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father.
    • The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave.
    • God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

For those of you new-ish around here, I intermittently share my faith.  But I’ve written less and less on the site and share little tidbits more on social media. I shared a series 6 years ago called What I Believe that you can read part 1 and part 2 there, and then later I shared about my parents voluntary missionary service, and ultimately about Christianity and the Mormon Church in Ghana.

Many of you know that I teach an early morning scripture class to teenagers at 5:45am.  And I’ve taught the Old Testament, then the New Testament, and this year I’ve taught about The Book of Mormon.   I plan to write up a post very soon about my thoughts on that, so look forward to THAT hot topic!  If you’re reading this and have specific questions ABOUT The Book of Mormon or just Mormons in general, lay them on me!
