How to follow your favorite blogs

I was having a conversation the other day with one of my good friends about Pinterest. She was telling me that she wished more of her friends pinned stuff because her Pinterest feed wasn’t moving very fast. I suggested she follow some of her favorite creative bloggers because if she likes their style, she will like what they pin. She didn’t realize she could do that. Once I got over the shock and lifted my chin up off the floor, I felt like a failure as a blogger and a  friend. Well, just as a blogger friend, I guess. This post might be basic for some of you may already know, but I want to share how to follow your favorite blogs {and other insider tips} and maybe offer a few suggestions and tips as well.

how to follow your favorite blogs

I blog because I love to share,  I love the community, I love the feedback, and I love the drive it gives me to do projects on my list. As a side note, I make money from the amount of pageviews I get. I don’t think it’s a secret that bloggers make money, but most of us don’t make enough money that we do it FOR the money…does that make sense? Below minimum wage for me, my friends (if we are counting  hours). Some have made it a very lucrative business though.

If you are like me, you have your favorite blogs to read, but don’t always remember to go there, don’t have the right time, get online but fish around other spots and then you realize it’s been a month or more since you’ve been to your favorite spot on the web.  Here are my ways to keep on top of following the creative inspiration.

Follow by Email

This is how I follow my top 10-15 blogs to make sure I see them.

follow blogs by email

If I know I love the blog and really don’t want to miss a minute, I enter my email, and a reminder comes straight to my inbox when they update. Then I click over and read the post. If I don’t have time that day, I delete and get the reminder again the next day, but I don’t get too far behind on my favorites. I don’t think I make this option as visible, it’s on the “subscribe” tab where my profile picture is. Kinda hidden, might need to change that. Most blogs have this option on their HOME page, just look around. (You can also click on the “sonar waves” icon at the top and subscribe via email).

Follow via Pinterest

Yes, it’s fun to follow your friends to see what they are pinning, it’s also fun to follow your favorite bloggers to see their projects (we pin our own images to make sure our hard work is “out there”) as well as what they want to make for dinner, dessert, or for their home! As I mentioned above, if we love what that blogger posts about, we will likely love what they pin.

Here is my profile. I’ve got my “Capturing Joy” board where I pin images from my site, then I have boards for Treats and Savory and Home Decor the top 3 things I pin too for others stuff that I want to do someday.

Following by Pinterest is a great way to see some major eye candy from your favorite creative bloggers. We all appreciate when you come to our site and “pin” something that you love, then all of your friends see it, too. It’s great for exposure, but if you follow a ton of people (like facebook and twitter and Instagram) if you aren’t on it often,  you can miss things.

Follow by Facebook

I see facebook as the best way to follow TONS of blogs and click over for more when something strikes your fancy. The catch is that you won’t often see them in your feed…see below for a tip on that.

There has been a lot of frustration with Facebook and small businesses the past year. They keep changing things, and we keep trying to find new tricks to make things more visible to those that have “liked” our pages. If you follow my Capturing Joy Facebook page, you probably have seen where I post “Come see my purple party” or something like that and then put (link in comments). I don’t share a picture or a link in the post because experiments (from me and lots of other bloggers) have shown that our “reach” is more broad when we don’t share links or pictures. Facebook people made the algorithms to do such.

For example, as of today I have 10,599 Facebook followers. When I post about a project, I’ll be lucky if HALF of those followers see in their Facebook feed that I have posted. On business pages, we get a little number that tells us our reach (you don’t see it, just us). The more comments and likes we get from followers, the higher our reach. The reach isn’t necessarily those that follow us, but often YOUR friends that see you have commented or liked some random blogger at Capturing Joy.

In the example below, the right side is an image I shared on Instagram and had it posted to my facebook page. You can see the reach was 1,141 people. Not ideal. In the evening, I just wrote out what I did with the annoying (link in comments) and I commented to my own  post with the link. That got 4,985 people in the reach. More ideal, but not the 10, 000+ that follow me.

facebook reach

Unless there is a ton of interaction, I’m generally under 5,000 for my reach.  This is why bloggers keep doing giveaways with “liking” business pages, because we want to broaden our REACH, to then bring traffic to our blogs.

If you do like our page, and WANT to see what’s going on, it may not come in your HOME feed.   My friend Cheryl at TidyMom just shared an amazing tip for facebook that is going to change my social media life!! Head on over to her post to read all about how to easily follow the pages you’ve liked on facebook separate from the friends you follow.  There is a separate feed JUST for pages you follow (i.e. Capturing Joy with Kristen Duke on facebook).

Follow via Bloglovin’

It used to be that people would click on the sonar waves icon and follow by Google Reader. For some reason, Google has decided to take this away this summer, and people that have used it for years are scrambling for new options to follow their favorite blogs. I have found Bloglovin’ to be a great alternative, and though I never used Google Reader myself, for those that did will love this. You just enter the link or blog that you love and add it to the list.

Follow via Google +

Any non bloggers on Google +? I’m trying to embrace it because it’s a product of Google, and everyone knows Google owns the internet. There is something called SEO that us bloggers care very much about. In a nutshell, we want our posts to be found in Google searches, and if we play on Google +, there might be a higher likelihood because they play together. So I’m on google +. If you are on it, follow bloggers there.

I updated my picture, and added a few other things to make it more personalized with a display of my projects in case anyone stumbles upon me there. Thanks for the design help, 733blog!  She designed my business cards, and I wanted a similar feel.

I’m working on embracing twitter as well. Some people love it. I see it more as blogs working with brands, but I have my blog feed automatically post to twitter. If you are on twitter, you will likely be able to follow  your favorite blog here.

I also made my twitter page pretty (maybe it will help me share on there?) and 733 blog helped me with the design and installation!

I love instagram, and I’ll share my blog posts on there once or twice a week, but I mostly like to keep it fun and light hearted. I’ve got a little icon on my sidebar that shows a little thumbnail of my Instagram feed.

You’ll find my Social Media icons at the top of my blog, it is either there or top of the sidebar on most blogs. Just click on the icon for where you want to follow, and it will take you to that bloggers page for you to follow. SIMPLE!

I hope this has helped some of you weigh the options of how to follow your favorite blogs! I love reading blogs, but my time is limited. It’s nice to be able to see what is going on and different days choose different methods to check out the creativity. Did you learn something new???

  1. I am so glad you posted this because I wasn’t following you in a few different places! I wish there was a universal way to follow your favorite bloggers on all media they use. I find that I follow people on IG that I do not read their blogs, but want to, and vice versa! Thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Kristen Duke says:

Yeah, it almost seems like those that you really want to see you have to follow in several spots! The inbox email is the best, my mom read this post and got all excited and signed right up for emails–I had to laugh at that;)

  2. Great post Kristen! I think we don’t realize that there are a lot of people that don’t know how to do this. Thanks for sharing. I am sure it will be so helpful to many!

    • Kristen Duke says:

so true! Us bloggers do the research, but if you don’t blog yourself, it seems people don’t quite realize all of this.

  3. Great post! I will be sharing this around the blogasphere. Great life reminder too that we need to make sure we are including those that aren’t at our level.

  4. I really enjoyed your post about how to follow your favorite blogs and the information on instagram That is a new part of social media for me and I am still overwhelmed with Facebook.

  5. Great post Friend!

  6. Thanks Kristen!

This is a great post to help both those of us who love to roam various blogs, but also for us newbie bloggers that are trying to navigate the social media landscape. Coincidentally, I just watched the Better Blogging Hangout on You Tube, with you, Brooke, Beckie, and Court and learned a lot there as well. I do agree, we are so overwhelmed by beautiful content online it can be hard to keep track. I can attest, until I started researching about “blogging” I had no idea. This is a big help!

  7. This was great info. and really good for those who might be new or confused about blogging and following…but I am puzzled as to why you don’t include other blog “readers”. In the group Blogtalk there is so much emphasis on Feedly and Feeddler as alternatives to Google Reader. And then there is Flipboard. I actually have many many fewer followers who subscribe through email than with readers. And personally, I find email subscriptions to be cumbersome! I’ve gradually weaned myself from almost all of them! Feeddler is my reader of choice!
As to Facebook…wow, I hadn’t heard about adding the link in the comments! Now I know why I’ve seen that done more and more! thanks for the tip!
This was my first visit here and I’ll def. be back for more great info. thanks!

  8. I think this is a wonderful post. I knew some of it, but also learned a lot. I am pinning this because every time I pin something like this I get so many views of what I am pinning, well not just because, but …. Thanks for all the remedial info. Oh, and now I will be following.
