On my Mind in March

My friends, I’m back! Oh how I’ve missed writing in my daily journal, and missed hearing from you loyal readers. Today, I’ll share some of what’s been on my mind lately, it is Monday after all.

  • I have LOVED all of the Decorating with Pictures inspiration. I’ve got my new painted creation up on my wall, with plans to add a few more. One “take home” I got from the series is that I want to print up some instagram/phone pictures. I love those everyday shots that I take, often when my “big camera” is home. Did you enter all of the fabulous giveaways for the month? 56 total, with lots of chances to win! Just scroll through the month of February posts to make sure you enter! (Open that link in a new tab and keep reading here!)
  • Are you crafty with a blog? Did you see there are open entries to the Creating with the Stars series? I kinda want to enter again, I was a participant nearly 4 years ago and became great friends with my star!
  • I posted on Facebook last night, suggestions for over-the-counter acne treatments. Trying to decide today if I’ll run out and get Cetaphil cleanser, Tea Tree Oil wash, or Clean and clear. I got SOOOOO many great suggestions, but think I’ll start with those.
  • My 90 year old grandparents are coming to see me this week! I’m prepping our spare room right now, anxious for their arrival. With my parents in Ghana, it will be nice to have them come hang out for a bit. They are still quite healthy, and I’m excited to snap some fun pictures with them while they are here.
  • If you were inspired by the Decorating with Pictures series, and created something of your own, I’d love to see it–take a picture! I’ll be sharing them throughout the year in a post!
  • Did you see the family meal plan I posted yesterday? Trying my best to be organized with meal planning!
  • It’s still cold in Texas, which is quite odd for March. Sadly, it’s been our COLDEST year that I remember (in the 11 years I’ve been in Austin) with 3 school cancellations and 3 or so late days, yet STILL.NO.SNOW!! It’s quite dis-heartening. We’ve had snow sporadically in the past, but not this year. They say….it might happen tonight.
  • Did you know that I have a SEARCH bar on my blog? Top right corner, I use it all the time (and just did to find our theme song) to try to find something QUICK that I just can’t remember where it is on my site. You should try it sometime.
  • Two years ago, I wrote a post called, What I Believe. I talk about growing up Mormon, and why I chose it as an adult as well. Then a year ago I wrote: What I believe Part II and how I live daily to Let my Light So Shine. In it, I have teamed up with some other Mormon bloggers to share a printed packet of our thoughts on how our beliefs have steered us on our path in life. At the end, I say I’ll personally mail a packet to you. I got an email this week with someone requesting a packet, and was so excited. Let me know if you’d like one, too!
  • My husband and I have been reading, studying, and altering how we feed our family. I feel like there are so many conflicting views out there in the world, and not really sure which direction to go. We’ve been reading some books and trying some experiments.  I’ll keep you all posted.
  • Are you actually reading all of these bullet points, or is this just for me? Either way, I like doing it. Gets things out of my brain, and into the history books.
  • I’ve been delving into Boy Scouting recently and stressing over my son on the road to his Eagle Scout. Scouting is NOT my thing, but I’m the mom, and I need to help him be organized about all the merit badges he’s working. Anyone else done this? Doing it? It will hang like a cloud over me, I fear, until my second son (who is 11.5) has his eagle. So…probably the next 4 years if I’m lucky.
  • I had a 24 hour stomach bug last week. I was in bed for a day (watching Revenge episodes back to back on netflix). It’s been a few years since I’ve had that!! I rarely get sick, so it throws me for a loop.
  • My cute youngest daughter wanted to go outside and play last week, but it was pretty cold. I said she needed a jacket and she exclaimed, “But I don’t want to put a jacket over my cute-ness!” Meaning her outfit. She puts together the most enjoyable ensembles. I just love it.Here is the picture I shared on instagram of her cuteness.
  • I heard a really great lesson at church yesterday that got me emotional and all choked up. It really isn’t hard to get me choked up though, I’m sensitive. In fact, that’s what the lesson was all about, being overly sensitive and being offended by people, and how we need to CHOOSE joy. It’s my goal to choose joy in life, I feel mostly happy and joyful in life, until I get my feelings hurt. And I’m too sensitive. I get my feelings hurt way too easily. I had a friend recently tell me its because I’m observant and aware of others needs so much so that it hurst me more when I feel it isn’t reciprocated. I thought that was an interesting thought. Back to the lesson part. We watched a little video clip that shows a really pessimistic guy going about his day complaining about people all around town, then is given a magic pair of glasses that allows him to see the biggest trials for the people he passes by through out the day. It allows him to be more sensitive, and see others as the Savior see’s us, and therefore softens his heart. We are in control of how we react to others (even me getting my feelings hurt) and only we can control how we will carry forward, despite how we are treated. See that video HERE.
  • I’ll close with a happy! (Lest that last bullet brought you down). Our church congregation had a family talent show last Saturday night, and we sang our Duke family theme song. It was really fun, and my awesome friend Jennifer took some pics of us and another friend captured it on video. A treasure to me. I shared our theme song back here. I wanted to create something more serious, didn’t think of a song, but my kids had been watching Looney Toons too much last summer, and we got a little silly in the song. We came up with it together, how we want to be a team, and our goal on how to live. I now love it! And I love my Team Duke.

I spent 8 hours on Saturday at Little Philmont. Scouts is definitely on my brain…. and Michael is 15. My guess is that he will get his Eagle about the time Henry gets his Bobcat. 😉 and then there is Bennett… I have a long life of Scouting ahead of me. (and Jane is 2 projects away from her Personal Progress… and she’s 13!) (but then I have Eve and Lily…) Oh my. It is a good thing I feel like these programs are inspired or I would go crazy. Also, I totally hear you on the food thing. I try to change how we eat, then I get overwhelmed and we have cold cereal for dinner. 😉 Loved your meal plan.

So many things to do, but all for the betterment of our kids, right? Just need to get organized with it all!!!

    Hi Kristen!
I have missed you so much! Have been reading you but not commenting. Pregnancy was great but childbirth was very bad..like seriously bad…I almost died (that bad!)…so it has taken me reallly long to be myself again. Now I am back 🙂 and my baby is doing great! 6 months now!

Okay…YOU NEED TO CONTINUE WITH YOUR LOVE STORY (hehe I have said it now!)

If you need help with healthy food planning let me know. We are not very organized in our house cleaning, nor extremely crafty but we are good at food.
    Nice to see/hear you!

    • Kristen Duke says:

Leire, it’s so great to hear from you! I’m so glad that you are ok after giving birth, please email me and tell me more. Thanks for the Love Story nudge, I’ll get right on it! Please also send me recipe, looking more at grain free and clean eating type recipes. thanks for saying HI!

Go Team Duke! I love how united y’all are!! And being silly is definitely ok in my book. I’m glad you were able to hear that lesson in church. You and I have discussed this before, how we are both very sensitive. Sometimes it makes life hard. But it makes life a lot deeper too! I was having a stressful weekend and really wishing you were there at the family gathering. I knew you’d pick up on my sensitivity and make things better. 🙂 And oh.my.goodness. She didn’t want to cover up her cuteness?? How cute is that! Give Cali Wali a hug for me. Love you!

    • Kristen Duke says:

That song came from a desire for us to be MORE united. It’s not always that way, unfortunately! I hate that there are get togethers without me, but we had to perform our family song! I’ll give my girl a hug for ya;) Love ya, Rach!

II love the video!! So fun! And I am right there with you when it comes to Scouting! Jon is adamant that Drew needs his Eagle before he is 14 because they just get SO busy in HS…I am doing my best to figure it out!!

    • Kristen Duke says:

They also do less and less with scouts at church for them after 14, we are SOOOO close and on track. A friend of mine told me to wait to finish the eagle project until they have started high school b/c some of it counts towards college applications, sooooo I plan to get it all but finished in the next year.

I love your family’s song/video! How incredibly cute! You always come up with the cutest ideas! I really appreciate your continue honesty. Reading your posts always make me happy because you keep it real!

Thank you for hosting this decorating with pictures series. It inspired me to get to it and put pictures up on my very white and plain walls. My husband is in law school right now and with apartment living that can feel very temporary and a lack of funds I just haven’t felt up to it, but I finally got some coupons and printed out some family pictures and hung them all over the place. Nothing special, but they are up on the walls. Our 1 year old loves looking at them and points to his daddy each time we look at them. One question about the picture series, are you going to post all of the winners?

  7. I am the exact same way about getting my feelings hurt–really working this year on giving other people the benefit of the doubt when I feel that way. Glad I’m not the only one!

  8. Go Team Duke! Such a great family inside and out!
