I’ve harnessed the love of the phone pictures, because I always have my phone with me. I don’t always lug my dslr around town, and I’ve been striving to learn  how to better edit my images on my phone so they look nicer than what the phone puts out. I first found a really great post series all about Instagram.  It is by Becki @ Whippycake {tempting accessories}. If you have never downloaded the Instagram app, or if you’ve had it for a while, check it out.  She did a week long series all about Instagram: the basics, who to follow (she is one of my faves to follow for pretty things),  composing a shot, and more of her fave secondary apps.  The images that she posts are so full of light, something I felt was missing from mine, and I was frustrated that my phone pics were just so dull…I’d tried so many different apps for pictures, and really didn’t want to spend 30 minutes editing ONE phone picture in 5 different apps, I just want to share a cute pic on instagram!

Since I met her for a mere 30 seconds at the SNAP conference last spring, I figured we were BFF’s and I could ask her what she did specifically (I didn’t see it after pouring over all of those posts above) to her images. This is a sample of the lovely images, and the lovely gal, and her tempting accessories:

She responded and told me she uses two “actions” in instagram together.  I was confused because I had tried that before in Instagram, and it doesn’t work (on the iphone, hear it does on Android), one can only use one action or color application per image. She said she uses one, publishes, then quickly deletes the picture, it is saved to her camera roll, then she applies the second and posts for real–whew! I tried that, but I wasn’t thrilled about the process.

Well just last night (late) I was chatting with my photog friend Heather @ Heather Walker Photography, and she gave a brilliant solution!  She accidentally discovered when she was flying that if your phone is on  AIRPLANE MODE, then it doesn’t publish the image to instagram, but saves to your photo roll.  SO, you can apply ONE action (pretend to publish and get denied b/c no internet connection), it saves in your photo roll, then apply the second. Of course you have to turn airplane mode OFF to then publish.  Maybe this is just slightly less complicated, but I was pretty excited to share it with Miss Whippycake today.

I thought it might help some of you as well. I love the lighter/brighter images so much more than the dull/flat look that comes straight out of the camera phone.

So tell me, what are your favorite photo editing apps?!?

  3. So I was telling Trevor the “airplane mode” trick tonight and he informs me you don’t even need to do that – – news to me – – so when you pick your filter and hit the “next arrow”, that’s when it puts the picture into your Instagram Folder. So when you’re on the publish page (the one after picking a filter) you just back out of it and never publish it, but the picture is still in your folder. I didn’t believe it until I tried it – he was right! We have Android phones – don’t know if that matters….

  6. I have turned into an Instagramaniac ; ) I accidentally managed to double up filters a few times. I think only because the pic wouldn’t go through to post for some reason, but saved in my photos. Then when I tried to republish it, I was able to add another filter on top. However, I couldn’t figure out how to do this ON PURPOSE. Ha! My first few were an exciting fluke. Now I have the scoop. Thanks for sharing this!! And I was beyond delighted that you stopped by to visit my blog the other day : )
