Cherry Chocolate Almond Cake Recipe

Texture in baking

I’ll admit it, I’m not generally much of a cake person, at least in the traditional sense. However, this cherry chocolate almond cake is borderline bread (like a banana bread) with some delicious add-ons that make it feel more like a treat. I LOVE texture in my baked goods, I think that’s why I don’t care for a standard cake with no texture inside. But this cake, which is inspired by Cherry Chocolate Almond Yopait Mix-Ins, is filled with maraschino cherries, mini chocolate chips and slivered almonds, and does not disappoint. Delicious texture in every bite!

If you haven’t every tried cherries in your baked goods, I highly recommend it. At first bite, this Cherry Chocolate Almond Cake reminds me a bit of the cherry miscellaneous bar or the Christmas banana bread that I’ve previous shared on my site. Say YES to cherries! I feel like they are under utilized…under loved.

This cake is inspired by one of my favorite afternoon snacks by Yoplait, the Cherry Chocolate Almond Mix-Ins yogurt. This is mine and my son Matthew’s favorite flavor. I’ve partnered with Yoplait this year as part of their Mom On campaign, where they are encouraging mothers to stop feeling shamed by what society thinks is right or wrong, and listen to your own instincts. I’m HAPPY to be a part of that message!

They even recently shared a humorous hotline number you can call (free of charge) to get a good laugh. Call 1-833-MOM-TIPS to “report” someone not doing their mom job right. Seriously, give it a try!

Back to the recipe. It’s delicious and my house smelled amazing while it was baking. My family all mentioned the smell at various moments, and I said…”Sorry, we’re not going to eat it tonight, it’s too dark and I have to photograph it tomorrow.” Ha! They are pretty good natured about it, but that aroma really did smell fabulous!

So do you want to see the actual recipe? I also love to share visual step by step photos.

Ingredients
  • 2.5 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tsp almond extract
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cup flour
  • 1.5 cup chocolate chips (or more!)
  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 cup marachino cherries (or more! I like more)
  • 2 Tbsp chocolate chips to add drizzle to top
  • 1 container Yoplait Cherry Chocolate Almond Mix-Ins yogurt sprinkle chocolates on top
Instructions
  1. Mix sugar, butter and almond extract.

  2. Add eggs and sour cream, mix well.

  3. Mix in water.

  4. Add baking powder, baking soda and salt, mix.

  5. Add flour and mix well.

  6. Fold in cherries, chocolate chips, almonds.

  7. Butter/flour a bundt pan. Toss in some reserved cherries and chocolate chips at the bottom of the bundt pan, so they will be on top when inverted. Pour the batter into the buttered pan and bake at 325 for 1 hour or more. Test with a toothpick.

  8. Rest for a few minutes in the pan before inverting and cooling on rack.

  9. Drizzle top with melted chocolate (2 Tablespoons chocolate chips, 1/2 tsp. coconut oil melted 30 seconds on half power)

  10. Sprinkle Yoplait Cherry Chocolate Almond Mix-Ins on top

So what do you think??? Because of the red cherries, it makes for a great Christmas neighbor gift idea, too! I actually wish I had more cherries, if you love them like me, double the cherries from the recipe above!

You might also like some of the free Christmas gift tags I’ve shared on my site before, just print and attach!

If you haven’t tried the Yoplait Mix-Ins, look for them on your next grocery trip! I also love the Salted Caramel Pretzel–YUM!

I partnered with Yoplait for this post, but all opinions (and my love of the new Mix-Ins) are all my own!

  1. Looks yummy.

  2. This looks good enough to have all year long, not just at Thanksgiving.

  3. I think it is a work of art, not simply a dish. I love it.

  4. Norman Hill says:

    Looks so tasty.

  5. Does this use yogurt or sour cream? The ingredients list yogurt, but the instructions list sour cream. Cannot wait to try this! Thank you.

    • Kristen Duke says:

shoot! Yes, it’s yogurt…my brain wasn’t functioning right, they work the same, but a yogurt is better for you.

  6. The preparation of the chocolate cake with cherries does not require the special skills. We only need the necessary ingredients to get an amazing taste.
